A message from Dean Douglas Elmendorf

To Harvard Kennedy School Faculty, Students, Staff, and Fellows,

People from throughout the HKS community, across the United States, and around the world have offered their warm remembrances of our colleague Ash Carter and expressed their profound feeling of loss at his passing. I encourage you to read some of these moving perspectives if you have not done so already: In addition to the wonderful obituaries in The Washington Post, The New York Times, and elsewhere, you can see HKS’s brief story, comments collected by HKS, comments collected by our Belfer Center, and comments by students

Ash’s example as a long-term faculty member at HKS, U.S. Secretary of Defense, and dedicated mentor and colleague will continue to inspire us and guide us—and remind us of how much our work as public servants can matter. On February 8, we will celebrate Ash’s remarkable life with a service in the Memorial Church in Harvard Yard at 11 a.m. I hope you can join us. If you have questions, please email Deans_Office_Events@hks.harvard.edu.

Best wishes,
Doug
