A message from Dean Douglas Elmendorf

To the HKS Community,

This Friday, November 11, is Veterans Day, a national holiday that honors military veterans of the U.S. armed forces.

Military service is an important and distinctive form of public service. We are fortunate to have among Harvard Kennedy School’s students many active-duty service members and veterans from the U.S. military and other countries’ militaries, and we have veterans among our faculty, staff, and fellows as well.

I am grateful to everyone at HKS who has protected people in this country or other countries through honorable military service. And as someone who has not been in the military, I appreciate the ongoing opportunity to learn about military service from these servicemembers.

In the coming days, we all have the chance to recognize the veterans in our community and to learn more from them:

  • Some members of the veterans community at HKS are being featured now on the digital screens around our campus, and the HKS website will highlight material about veterans later this week.
  • There will be a reception to salute veterans in the lobby of the Wexner Building this Thursday, November 10, from 12 pm to 2 pm.
  • A special Forum event focused on veterans and service will take place next Friday, November 18, at 4 pm.

Best wishes,

Doug
